LAMB Summer 2017

Summer Recap Part 1

The Guitar Man

Sunny and the Guitar Man

A Burmese Muslim family began coming to one of our Parties in the Park sites.  They came looking for Pastor Jim to help them.  Father, Mother and small children all came.  The father didn’t look very happy about being there.  He wasn’t too sure he wanted his small children to play.  They didn’t stay around after they received some help.

The next week they were back.  This was the week that Camp Lutherhaven had a Servant Event called Burmese Mission Outreach (BMO).  Youth from several churches around the country signed up.  One of the youth leaders brought her guitar to lead some singing.  The family came looking for some help from Pastor Jim.  Once again, the father didn’t look very happy, until he saw the guitar.  After the Servant Event team had finished singing with the kids, the father walked over to take a closer look at the guitar.  The youth leader handed him her guitar and asked, “Would you like to play it?”  He spent the next 45 minutes happily strumming the guitar and singing in Burmese while his children played, and his wife chatted with the other moms.

He and his family came back every day that week.  Every day he could strum the guitar and sing in Burmese.  Each week he was back with his family.  He eagerly looked to see if anyone had a guitar that he might play.  During the last week of Parties in the Park, Southwest Lutheran Church of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was experiencing their Stay Mission.  Pastor Joe Ferry and Sunny both brought their guitars to lead singing.  Sunny is also a refugee from Burma.  He began talking to the father in Burmese.  He learned about the man’s love for the guitar.  Sunny was moved to compassion for the man.  Sunny had an extra guitar back at his home.  He enlisted an adult chaperone from Southwest to take him home.  Sunny returned with a guitar and presented it to the father.  The father’s eyes opened wide.  He could not believe that this young man was handing him a guitar to keep! He was last seen walking away, strumming the guitar, and smiling.

There are many ways that we can share the love of Jesus with others.  Sometimes we get to use our words.  Other times we use our actions.  God’s promise is that each time we share His love, He will act.  We don’t always get to see the result of our sharing the love of Jesus.  But we always can experience the joy of doing the will of the Father.  Each youth group that came this summer helped to share the love of Jesus with the “Guitar Man.”  Sunny was moved to complete the act of love by giving away a guitar.

Luke 3:10-11 (GW with Pastor Jim’s update in brackets)
10  The crowds asked him, “What should we do?” 11  He answered them, “Whoever has two {guitars} shirts should share with the person who doesn’t have any. Whoever has food should share it too.”

Meet Summer Intern: Moe Sheh

LAMB Intern Moe Sheh teaching a session during Leadership Training.

This summer I am an intern for LAMB. I am really happy to be an intern for LAMB youth. The things that I am really excited about this summer are working with the youth and showing them different ways they can share their faith. I am really excited about working with other leaders from different churches. The most important things that I am excited about doing as an intern is sharing my faith and love of Jesus, and teaching the kids who don’t believe in Jesus.

We Still Need Your Help!

Even though our summer outreach has come to an end, LAMB still needs your help!  Here are ways you can partner with LAMB to help us continue to bring the Good News of Jesus to the Burmese children and their families that we have built relationships with this past summer:

  • Pray for continued contact with the children and their families by LAMB staff, youth, and volunteers.
  • Pray for open hearts to the Good News of Jesus.
  • Pray for protection for those children and family members who want to know more about Jesus.
  • Pray for our LAMB interns to continue to grow in leadership, faith, and evangelism.
  • Pray for LAMB staff to seek God’s leading as to who we should invest our time and energy in sharing the Good News with, as well as the best way to do this.
  • Pray for the LAMB board as they look for more Board members who can fill crucial gaps on the board.

VOLUNTEER -LAMB is looking for people who love Jesus and have a heart for the lost peoples of Burma who can volunteer as:

  • Medical advocates
  • Tutors for elementary, middle school, high school, and college students
  • Job developer
  • Helpers in our Friendship Center
  • Social media coordinator
  • Web master.
  • Board members — The LAMB Board is especially in need of someone who has development experience.

LAMB Youth Host First PIP

LAMB Youth Malone with his new friends at Party in the Park Week1

The LAMB Youth followed up their week of Leadership Training by hosting the first Party in Park, June 12- 15.

The site that was chosen has a large number of Burmese Muslims living in it.  We weren’t sure how many kids we would get as this was during Ramadan. Ramadan is the month-long time of fasting.  Muslims fast during the day.  Some devout Muslims will even refrain from drinking or swallowing their saliva.  At night the feasting begins.  It is not uncommon for entire families to stay up all night eating and celebrating.  Families sleep throughout the day because of this.

The LAMB Youth spent time during the week of Leadership Training praying over this first Party in the Park.

One answered prayer is the positive and joyful reception by children and adults alike at the playground. Some of the children said, “We have been waiting all year for you to return!”  Adults were happy to visit with Kyaw Sann and Pastor Jim in the zyat and under the shade trees. Children enjoyed their time with their LAMB Youth “buddies” as they played soccer, painted, made jewelry, and colored the sidewalk with chalk. We delighted in their attention to the skits and songs.

Meet LAMB Summer Intern:   MaryJane Keller

MaryJane teaching how to share your faith using the “Do vs. Done.”

This summer I am a LAMB intern. Being a LAMB intern is a great opportunity for me to get experience and share the love of Christ. I’m pretty excited, yet nervous because I know being a leader isn’t a position but a lifestyle. Pray for me as I’m on this journey that I would be made worthy of Christ’s calling.

First Ever LAMB Girl’s Soccer Tournament  and Food Fundraiser!

The 2017 Fort Wayne Diverse United Team.

MaryJane Keller and Ehtha Yu Paw planned and executed a girls’ soccer tournament on June 17. They created the FWDU (Fort Wayne Diverse United) Team and recruited area soccer players from many tribes, tongues, and religions. They competed against teams from Indianapolis, Louisville, and Tennessee. Although FWDU placed third, they built bonds with fellow soccer players and shared the Gospel with them through a participation packet for each player which included a Gospel of John and Scripture portions on CD in a variety of languages.

MaryJane, Ehtha, Paw Ku So, and Sayler were invited to complete in a tournament in Huron, South Dakota, on July 3-4 on a combined team with players from Louisville and Indianapolis. They placed 3rd.

While the soccer tournament was underway, LAMB Youth were selling food prepared by their parents and friends. They raised $2237.55 for summer ministry.  The LAMB youth decided to tithe a portion of the amount raised ($223.75) to New Life Lutheran Church to help purchase a new 15 passenger van.

There is still time join in the LAMB Soccer tournament/food fundraiser. You can do so by clicking Donate Now  and e-mailing treasurer@lamb-fw.orgtelling us that you are contributing to this fundraiser.

Kyaw Sann Heads to Burma!

Kyaw Sann has been living in the USA for over 10 years.  It has been his desire to return to Burma and visit his family members.  He especially wants the opportunity to share Jesus with them.  Kyaw Sann is the only member of his family (on his mother’s side) that is a Christian.

Kyaw Sann fought against the military government of Burma.  He fled Burma to Thailand with  his wife and daughter.  While in Thailand they had two more children.  His wife and three children are all now US citizens.  Kyaw Sann has been unable to change his refugee status. His wife and children returned to Burma the beginning of the summer for a two-month visit.  Kyaw Sann has now received his travel document and his Burmese visa.  He joined his family in Burma in July.

Please pray for Kyaw Sann that he would have many opportunities to share his faith with his family members.  Pray that they would become his sons and daughters in Christ.  Pray also for his safe return to Fort Wayne.

Leadership Training

One of the teams practices a song for Party in the Park.

During the week of June 5-9, 2017, 40 youth ranging from kindergarten to newly graduated from high school met for three hours every day for Leadership Training.  Each day began with a delicious lunch prepared by one of the moms.  We had so much food left over that we were able to share with members of New Life and the neighborhood!  Next Pastor Jim would lead a Bible study based on our theme verse for the summer, 2 Timothy 1:7-8a. “God didn’t give us a cowardly spirit but a spirit of power, love, and good judgment. So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.”  The youth really got into the Bible studies.  Big kids helped little kids with Bible reading and spelling out answers. One member of New Life who happened to be passing by, remarked, “When I was in youth group, our group never studied the Bible like these kids are!  This is really neat to see!”  The LAMB interns took over for the rest of the time.  The youth broke into four groups.  Each group worked on a Bible skit and songs.  Next, one of the LAMB interns taught a way to share their faith.  On Monday, Moe taught about using the Bridge.  On Tuesday MaryJane taught about Do Versus Done.  On Wednesday, Parker taught about the Morality Ladder.  On Thursday Eh Doh gave his testimony.  On Friday the different groups presented their Bible skit and songs.  Their time together ended with a snack, clean up, and prayer.

Summer Interns: Bennett & Eh Doh

Meet Jr. LAMB Summer Interns: Bennett & Eh Doh!

Bennett Yamanaka Valerio

I’m so glad to be a LAMB Youth intern. I want to spread the Word of God. I want to tell the kids Who died for them. I want to tell them that they can go to heaven. I want to help them. If they are in a time of need, I could help try to help them, pointing them to God.  I want to share what I know about Jesus and God, and hopefully learn more.

Eh Doh Soe

The reason why I became a LAMB Youth intern is that I could help my church and many other people to learn about Jesus. I want to help the little kids have fun and learn about Jesus so that they would come back and learn. I also want to help kids have fun when they are bored around summer. It’s fun to watch them learn about the things that are taught to them. Lastly, I want to teach kids about Jesus so that they would be able to teach their parents about Jesus and be able to learn more, too!

Pastor Jim debriefs the group about their experience at Leadership Training at its close on Friday.

Prayer Pointers

I want to share a few items that I taught to our LAMB Youth last week about the role of prayer in sharing their faith at Parties in the Parks and beyond:

1) Evangelism starts with prayer.  Ask God to give you an open door to share about Jesus.  Ask God to help you listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Often God will answer that prayer by having the other person initiate the conversation about Jesus.

2) Look for opportunities to pray with your friend. If your friend shares a concern or problem, pray about it! Always ask first before you pray.  Simply say, “As a follower of Jesus, I can pray to Jesus about this.  Would it be fine if I pray with you right now?”  If your friend agrees, then pray.  If your friend says no, then respect that answer.

3) Always pray in the name of Jesus.  This is important so that your friend knows who you are praying to and who is answering.

Love is Fearless

Thank you for joining in our LAMB Mission Adventure 2017! The LAMB Youth interns have chosen the verse: 2 Timothy 1:7-8a. “God didn’t give us a cowardly spirit but a spirit of power, love, and good judgment. So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.” Putting this verse into practice and leading their fellow youth to do the same, the interns will teach witnessing techniques, prepare skits and games, review “Parties in the Parks” procedures, and build relationships during Leadership Training, June 5-9.
